Loksabha passed Lokpal bill, constitution amendment failed

Government of India proposed Lokpal bill today in the floor of the lower house of Indian parliament. Government did not provide sufficient time for debate. Opposition parties demanded longer time for debating this very important bill. Government was adamant for voting on the bill today only.

Loksabha passed Lokpal bill today. However, the ruling UPA denied to incorporate any suggestions from Anna Hazare and his civil society. Opposition parties moved several amendments but all failed. Government was seen very adamant in the floor. They had managed required number to pass their bill and to fail opposition led amendments. However, government itself brought three amendments to please its supporting parties.

Rahul Gandhi, general secretary of Congress party wanted Lokpal as a constitutional body. BJP, CPI(M) and few other allies in NDA opposed constitutional amendment and it was failed.
