Famous people from Murshidabad Shaharwali society

*

Jalmandir inside Dhanpat Vasahi, Palitan

Shaharwali community is a small community but it has produced many famous people in various fields Starting from the Jagat Seth family. Jagat Seth family was very close to the Nawabs of Murshidabad. In fact, Nawab Mursheedkoolie Khan braught Jagat Seth with him while fleeing from Delhi to Mursheedabad. The Jagat seth family has taken the charge of greatest Jain pilgrimage Sammet Shikhar and managed it for over a century. He has maneged to get some Farmans from the Badshaha of Delhi in favor of the Jains. They also built Sanwalia Parasanath temple made of Kasauti (Gold tester) stone. This was the only temple in the world made of this stone.

Amichand and Raidurlabh, the merchants in the court of Nawab Siraz-ut-doula were also belong to Oswal Jain community. The Oswal Jain community in Murshidabad, later on, described as Shaharwali.

The Golechha family was the next to come in the picture. Harakchand golechha of this family took charge of Sammet Shikhar from the Jagat Seth family after their decline. He has also built Ratnamayee Chouveesee (24 Tirthankara idols made of various gemstones). Those, later on, installed in the Chintamani Parshvanath temple. Daughter of Harakchand Golcha was married to Nanak Chand Kothari, S/ O Panachand Kothari. Nanak Chand Kothari was a new comer to Azimganj at that time. Jyoti Kothari, writer of this blog, is his Grand Grand son.

Dugar family served the society most. Practically they reigned for almost a century. Pratap Singh dugar of this family took a "Sangh" to Palitana in Samvat 1883 with Upadhyaya shree Kshamaratana.

(Kathgola Temple: Photo courtsey

)

Rai Bahadoor Laxmipat Singh Doogar and Rai Bahadoor Dhanpat singh Doogar were his two sons who carried the tradition with them. Laxmipat Singh, the elder brother built famous Kathgola temple and Dadabadi and decorated the 100 acres land with beautiful marvel and statues and other decorative from Oslar company. Perhaps this is the biggest land devoted to a Jain temple. Sripat Singh Dugar of this family built two clleges in Jiaganj and a communnity hall in Kolkata Jain Bhawan. He also contributed generously for publication of Jain stories series by Pandit Kashinath Jain.

Rai Bahadoor Dhanpat Singh Doogar, the younger brother has done in numerous work for the religion, trade and society. He built Famous Dhanpat Vasahi alias Babu Ka dehrasar (Temple of Lord Adinath) in the talhatti (Valley) of Palitana, the Shatrunjaya Teertha.

He also took charge of Sammet Shikhar teertha from Golechha family. The Dugar family had maintained it for more than seventy years before the Jain community took charge from them. Rai Dhanpat Singh built the main temple there in Madhuvana and also Jal Mandir above the hill. He also built dharamshala there. He has erected many other temples and Dharamshalas in various pilgrimages such as Kshatriyakunda, Gunaya, Barakar, Kakandi, Champapur etc. and other places such as Azimganj, Ganpatganj, Pratapganj etc.

He set up a printing press in Azimganj to get all the Jain Agamas (Sacred and holy books) printed. It was the first time in the history that Jain Agamas were published in printed form.

They were the Zemindars of Harawat estate (Poornia district of modern Bihar). Rai Bahadoor Dhanpat Singh Doogar founded the Bengal chamber of Commerce and adorned the Chair as the first President of the same. Kamala Pat Singh Kothari, S / O Nanak Chand Kothari was married to grand daughter of Rai Bahadoor Dhanpat Singh Doogar. Kamala Pat Singh Kothari is great grand father of Jyoti Kothari, author of this blog.

Doogar family also owned their own Railway from Azimganj to Nalhati.

Is it safer to put money into foreign stocks than American stocks?

Dear Sir,
Please read this article and comment on it.
Sensex reached 500 marks from its base point 100 with in seven years where as Dow Jones took 46 long years to achieve it . Again journey of Sensex from 500 to 1000 points took only four years but Dow took sixteen years for the same. Read data rich comparison of the history of two major stock exchanges of the world. One is from America, the world leader and another from emerging economy, India.

Introduction

Gulabi Nagar Vichar Manch is a public forum of Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. The Manch has been meeting every Sunday to discuss various topics e.g. matters of public interest, education, society, culture, religion, health, etc.

Dr. Ujala Arora, former Sanskrit education minister of Rajasthan along with Shree Girdhari lal Bhargava, Member of Parliament, have founded this Manch on 26th day of June 1983.

The Manch has conducted more than 1300 meetings continuously since its inception. It calls Government authorities, academicians, leaders of respective fields or a celebrity as its chief speaker every Sunday to discuss a given topic. A reputed person adorns the chair.

Presently, meetings are conducted in Scouts and guides hall, Ramniwas bagh, Museum road, Jaipur from 10.30 A.M. to 12.30 P.M.

General public are entitled to join the meeting. They can raise their questions. The chief speaker answers those questions. General public can also suggest, add or modify.

This is an open forum and joining is absolutely free of cost. Organizers arrange for everything needed to conduct the session. They also arrange for tea and snacks.

eminent personalities like Admiral B.S.Shekhawat, Lt. General Sagat Singh, Hon'ble Chief Justice M.N. Mukherjee, Hon'ble Justice B.S. Dave, D.R. Mehta, Chairman, Stock and exchange Board of India; M.L. Mehta,Chief Secretary, Rajasthan, have attended the meetings as chief speakers.

Quality, Origin, and Properties of Ruby stone, yellow and blue Sapphires

Corundum, rubies, and sapphires

Want to know about quality, properties, and origins of beautiful precious gemstones red colored rubies and blue and yellow sapphires? This article is for those who are interested in having in-depth knowledge of these colored gemstones.
Ruby belongs to the corundum family. Blue sapphire, yellow sapphire, pink sapphire, and green sapphires also belong to the same corundum family. Chemically, all these stones are similar.
Properties of corundum: Properties of rubies and sapphires are similar to corundum. Corundum has the hardness of nine in Moh's scale and specific gravity around four. These are the hardest gemstones but diamonds and one of the heaviest too. Corundum contains aluminum and oxygen. Natural corundum is opaque but sometimes it reacts with water in the mines and takes a crystalline form. This crystalline structure converts it into gemstones.
When corundum comes into contact with coloring agents likes of chromium, nickel, etc (in a very small quantity) and reacts chemically inside the mines, it converts naturally into Ruby or Pink-blue-yellow or green Sapphires.

Origins of rubies and sapphires

The best quality rubies and yellow sapphires are found in Burma (Myanmar). Burmese stuff is beautiful and bright in color. Good quality Burmese is transparent. Burmese rubies are rare and fetch a high value. A 5 carats fine ruby may go up to $ 40 to 60 thousand per carat. Burmese sapphires are also expensive.
Kashmir, India produces the best quality blue sapphires. However, these are very rare and expensive. Burmese blue sapphires are also very good in quality. CambodianVietnam, And Kabul rubies sometimes resemble with Burmese.
Rubies and sapphires found in Ceylon are generally transparent but not having the rich color as Burmese. Ceylon produces very good quality of the pink sapphire.

Other origins of ruby and sapphire

There are several other origins of rubies and sapphires. Thai rubies and sapphires normally have a black tint due to the presence of iron. They are rich in color and have very hard textures. Thai rubies and sapphires also have good luster.
African and Indian rubies are of inferior quality and generally opaque or translucent. Generally, those are treated as corundum and not ruby. Kenya, Madagascar are rich sources of commercial ruby. Koromoro, Johnson, and Best pockets are other African varieties. Best pocket mines produce very nice quality, an exception in African mines. Johnson is also a good one.
Tanzania has recently started producing very good quality of a ruby. Some pieces are extra fine and resemble Burmese quality. Rubies ( corundum) are also found plenty in Orissa, BastarMysore and Andhra regions of India.
The best quality rubies are found in Burma but the blue sapphires are mined from Kashmir (India). These are rare of the rarest gemstones. These transparent stones have a peacock blue color with great luster. A pin-point color tint in the bottom of a cut stone spreads to the whole stone giving it a marvelous look.

Star rubies and sapphires

Normally Indian and African rubies are used for making beads, drops, and cabs. These qualities are not very good for cut stones. Most of these stones are cut and polished in Jaipur, the pink city of India.
Some foreign materials are found naturally in rubies and sapphires of some origins. These materials embedded within the colloidal state gives these stones milky look. This milky inclusion converts into a star-like six lined shape in some of the stones and those are called star rubies or sapphires. Stars are costlier than the normal rubies and sapphires because of its rarity and beauty. Americans, Europeans, and Japanese people love star rubies and sapphires very much.

Jaipur, the pink city and color stone hub

Jaipur, the Pink city of India, is one of the best-planned cities in the world. It has now become the global color stone hub. Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh has built the city in the early 18th century. He had ensured the best human resources from all over the world to come and reside in the city.
He invited renowned Jewelers and gemstone dealers from various parts of the country to ensure the growth of Gems and Jewelry business in Jaipur. Jargad, Surana, Choraria, Tank, Mookim and Malpani families are few to name.
Since then Jaipur is flourishing as a center of excellence in cutting and polishing precious and semi-precious gemstones.
Jaipur cut and polish Emerald, ruby, sapphire, coral, cat's eye, tanzanite, tsavorite, tourmaline, rhodolite, garnet, hessonite, aquamarine, blue topaz, citrine and amethyst, pink quartz, rock crystal, onyx and many other gemstones in beads, drops, cabochon and many other shapes. These stones are cut in oval, octagon (Emerald-cut), square, round, marquise, pear, heart, and fancy or irregular shapes.
The artisans of Jaipur are well trained and skilled. In fact, they have mastered the art. They can cut rough gemstones in a way to make the best out of it. Very few gemstones are mined in India but most of the colored stones mined globally imported to Jaipur to cut and polish.
The artisans, in the able guidance of the local manufacturers, cut and polish rough stones to enhance its color, glitter, and beauty, thus the value. Jaipur gem manufacturers and dealers add value worth thousands of millions of rupees. Gemstones from Jaipur have a worldwide demand.

Gemstones: Local and export business

The cut and polished colored gemstones are assorted for shape, size, color, clarity, and quality. Prices are fixed up and the goods are given to the local brokers to sell in Jaipur or sent to indigenous markets. Sometimes, it is exported directly to overseas customers. America is the biggest overseas buyer for a long time. EU, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Italy, Germany, Thailand, Gulf countries, Canada, etc are some of the major importers.
The local traders are high performers, ethical and have a sound knowledge base. The cost of production is low that results in an attraction to worldwide buyers. The Jaipur jewelers and gem dealers also sell their goods worldwide through their global business network.
Jaipur sells colored gemstones to local Indian buyers. India has been emerging as a global economic power and that push up the sales of these expensive goods.

Jaipur, The Emerging Jewelry hub

Jaipur is traditionally known for colored gemstones especially emeralds. However, it is growing fast as a center of Jewelry manufacturing. Jewelers of Jaipur have now started manufacturing beautiful diamond and precious stone jewelry, silver jewelry, beaded jewelry, and fashion jewelry. These are beside traditional Kundan Meena Jadau Jewelry.
Jaipur Kundan Meena Jadau is one of its kinds in the world. Beautifully enameled artistic gold jewelry studded with flat diamonds and colored gemstones are recognized as a sign of aristocracy since the Mogul period. Gem and Jewelry industry of Jaipur provides dream jobs to many.
Besides gemstones, Jaipur produces a good amount of gold and silver jewelry and jewelry studded with precious/semi-precious stones and diamond. Much of them are exported especially silver jewelry with beads.
The government has facilitated by creating a special zone for jewelry manufacturing at Sitapura area in Jaipur. The Gem and Jewelry Export Promotion Council of India is the government body to promote and regulate export and import business in Jaipur.

  • Edward Fleming,
Thanks for your comment. However, I do not agree with your opinion. Child labor is not a big issue here. Business people in Jaipur are highly accountable and gemstone trade is flourished here for observing high morale. There are few black ships everywhere and they are not in the majority.

interesting that you fail to mention the child labor issues and endemic corruption that plague the industry in Jaipur. As a major cutting center, the lack of accountability and complicity of businesses has been a major factor in undermining the Kimberley process and other initiatives to clean up the jewelry and gemstone industry.

I am writing to you now from my sickbed here in the hospital. preparing for my last surgery, which the doctor has clearly signed that there is only a 30% chance of surviving the aftermath. I seek your sincere commitment to the rebuilding of Afgan and its inhabitant.
There is 225kg of gold my husband has in a Societe Africaine du Metaux Precioux SAMP- Cotonou -Republic of Benin of which I am the next of kin. With my health condition and because my husband and I have no child, I decide to contact you so that I will pass the right of next of kin to you to recover the gold.
This is on the condition that you will take only 30% of the gold for yourself, while you will use the remaining 70% for the fewer privileges people in the society.
This is in fulfillment of the last request of my late husband: that a substantial part of the gold be used to carter for the fewer privileged people, If this condition is acceptable to you, you should contact me immediately with your full names and contact information's so that I will secure the trust to pass the right of next of kin to you.

      • Rajender Ji,
I agree with you that Jaipur needs a "Gemstone hall" or such type of other facilities. It will boost Gems and Jewelry business in Jaipur.
Diamond halls are facilitating diamond and gemstone traders in Mumbai too.
        Thanks for your comment.

It is advisable to stay with your present study CA. The world is facing a deadly face of recession and slow down. The diamond trade is no exception.
You may come to the trade after some times when the recession will over.
