Holi festival in Murshidabad
Holi of Murshidabad Shaharwali society was an important and renowned event. Shaharwali society used to play Holi with great enthusiasm in both Azimganj and Jiaganj.
Holi, the festival of color had been enjoyed for a week in Murshidabad. It had been starting on the day of Falguna Shukla Ashtami (Eighth day of bright half in Indian lunar calendar) ending on Chaitra Krishna Pratipada (Ekam, first day of dark half in Indian lunar calendar).
Holi was a part of "Raisi" of Shaharwali society. They used Safron, rose water, Tesu (Herbal color) and other beautiful colors and Abir (Gulal) to play Holi. Pichkari (Piston like instrument to play Holi with liquid color). Pua and Pakodi were the special dishes along with Thandai (a soft drink). large number of people used to have some "Bhang" to enjoy.
"Holi ki sang" and "Holi ka Bhandu" were popular humor creating events of Murshidabad Shaharwali community. People had been enjoying "Holi ki barat" with humor and enjoyment. "Holi ki sail" or feast was also very popular those days.
Nirmal Kumar Singh Nowlakha, a famous Zemindar of Azimganj was very fond of Holi. many stories about him is famous about Holi.

Gulabi Nagar Vichar Manch organized forum discussion on Holi: Color festival of India on the eve of Holi festival on February 28, 2010.
Gyanendra Singh Shekhawat, Chief speaker, informed many salient features about Holi, the color festival of India. He told that this is the festival which abolishes all barriers among old and young, rich and poor. He told that Holi has provided an outlet to human emotions. It is symbol of victory of good over evils. He illustrated this with the story of Hiranya Kashyap and Prahlad.
Tejkaran Parashar informed that the King of Jaipur used to go to Dashara Maidan and ignite Holi rubbing stones. The King used to ignite the fire at first and then every body took the fire to ignite at their own places.
Jyoti Kothari added that Holi is a Shudra festival according to Hindu culture. It gives an outlet to human emotions related to "Tamasik" britti. Raksha bandhan is a Brahman, Dashara is a Kshatriya and Diwali is a Vaishya festival. However, every body enjoys all four festivals. He also told that the full moon day is generally considered as to increase madness. Holi, fall on the full moon day that increases activity of madness.
Moreover, it is the end of spring which is again season of Entertainment, joy and happiness. He also informed about Holi of Bengal and especially of Azimganj, Murshidabad.
Darshan Kothari told that he enjoys Holi very much with his friends. He and his friends enjoy colors.
Ashok Bothra, the presiding Dignitary appeal every one to play Holi peacefully and not to create any nuisance.

Famous Shaharwali people and families Part 3

Nirmal Singh Nowlakha was one of the most famous "Rais" of Azimganj. Shaharwali society was known for its "Raisi" and there were several "Rais" families in both Azimganj and Jiaganj. However, Nirmal Kumar Singh Nowlakha popularly known as "Nowlakha ji" was the talk of the town. He was married to the daughter of Maharaj Bahadur Singh Dugar, another Rais of Jiaganj.*
He was renowned for organizing "Holi", the Indian festival of colors. Nowlakha Rose garden in Azimganj was the best in whole Murshidabad district. He had also been organizing Football tournaments.
Besides his Raisi he founded hospital in Azimganj. This is the only hospital in Azimganj till date (Now Government runs that).
Parent of present Acharya Padmasagar ji was working under him.
Shashi Nowlakha, his Grandson (S/o Charitra Kumar Singh) is now very active in social field. He is trustee of several Teerthas and other social and Charitable institutes.
